Neurodivergent has lost all clinical meaning

The word “neurodivergent” started as activist shorthand to push back against the framing of autism as pure deficit. It was useful, pointed, and grounded in a specific community. Twenty years later, it covers autism, ADHD, dyslexia, Tourette’s, OCD, anxiety, depression, trauma responses, introversion, “spicy brain,” and TikTok-diagnosed everything. When a term means almost any cognitive variation a person identifies with, it stops doing the work it was invented to do.

That isn’t a moral failing of anyone using the word. It’s just what happens to language under pressure. But pretending the term still carries clinical or even sociological weight muddies real conversations about real conditions.

From activist term to umbrella to vibe

Judy Singer coined “neurodiversity” in the late 1990s, primarily in the context of autism. By the 2010s, “neurodivergent” had usefully expanded to include conditions like ADHD and dyslexia, which share genuine cognitive-architectural features. By the 2020s, the term had ballooned to include essentially any mental-health diagnosis and then any self-identification at all. On parts of social media, “neurodivergent” now functions roughly like “interesting personality.” The original activist project — that some neurological differences are stable variations rather than illnesses — was specific. The current usage is so broad that it can’t make any specific claim, which is the same as making no claim.

Why the muddle has costs

When “neurodivergent” includes both severe autism and mild trait introversion, three bad things happen. First, people with high-support-needs conditions get rhetorically averaged with people who are functionally fine, which makes their actual needs less visible. Second, employers, schools, and policymakers can’t tell who they’re accommodating. Third, self-diagnosis runs on the same vocabulary as professional diagnosis, so people who genuinely meet criteria for ADHD or autism find their experience flattened against TikTok aesthetics. None of this is the fault of individuals using the word — it’s a coordination problem. But the result is that “I’m neurodivergent” now requires a second sentence to actually mean anything.

The validation question

It’s worth being careful here. Many people who adopt the term, even loosely, are responding to genuine struggle with focus, sensory overload, or social fatigue, and feeling seen in a community matters. That’s real and not to be dismissed. At the same time, language that explains everything explains nothing, and emotional resonance is not the same as clinical accuracy. If something about how your brain works is making your life harder, the most useful next step is usually a real evaluation by a clinician who can name it specifically, not adopting an umbrella that fits everyone. For political solidarity, the wide tent has uses; for medical, educational, or workplace decisions, you need narrower words.
